Vice-Chancellor

Before I say anything, I am reminded of a quote by a great scientist Albert Einstein, “Education is not the learning of facts but the training of mind to think”.

I feel really honoured, that I have been entrusted the responsibility of first regular Vice Chancellor of the Sardar Patel University, Mandi. The great Indian Polymath, Chanakya has aptly foreseen the value of education and it can be understood from his quote, “Education is the best friend. An educated person is respected everywhere. Education beats the beauty and the youth”. This quote is undoubtedly showing its significance as education has a fulcrum around which the teaching-learning process revolves, therefore the university aims at providing a transformative education that generates new knowledge for the society and helps in the attainment and aspirations of individual goals as well.

The Sardar Patel University (SPU) is the second general University of Himachal Pradesh which is in its inception and yet to take on solid ground in order to have a National and International recognition. This can be achieved through quality education and also contribute to society through teaching, research and empowering students especially the rural folk to fulfil their academic and professional passions in the University. There is an inseparable link between teaching and research and therefore, there is an urgent need to establish, build and sustain a complete integration of technology and state of art research which is also a desirous goal of National Educational Policy 2020. The university must grow not only in terms of its student and learner base but should also have a physical appearance for which quality infrastructure and human resource shall be needed to enable the institute to be competitive and ahead of others, offering the similar courses. This is certainly a challenging task yet we have a liberty and advantage of starting a fresh and leave behind the weakneses of older institutions. Since the new education policy (NEP 2020) has already made some ground and I do visualize the curriculum that impart and nurture a variety of skills that prepare students for outstanding careers in various areas across the World. The generation of skill full youth shall be mutually reinforcing for the future growth of the University as well. Imparting skills, up-skilling and new qualifications that enables students to earn their livelihood instead of making further addition to the unemployed youth. It is intended that many innovative, vocational, skill development programmes and courses suitable as well as needed in the state on the line of broader framework of NEP shall be started in integration with the traditional streams of science, commerce, social science and humanities in near future.

The foremost objective of the SPU shall be to provide a learning environment in which faculty, staff and students can discover, examine critically, preserve and transmit the knowledge, wisdom and values that will help ensure the survival of this and future generations and improve the quality of life for all.  My efforts shall be to create a centre of teaching, learning and research that attracts students and faculty from different parts of the world to justify the name “University” in real sense.

The Sardar Patel University is located in the picturesque hills of district Mandi which is heart of the state of Himachal Pradesh and presently functioning from historical town Mandi. I seek the cooperation of every one of you for raising the educational standard of this newly born University and extend my best wishes for the bright future of our students, teaching as well as non-teaching staff of the University.
